The Hardest Climb

It was the first time, but it wouldn’t be the last. As I struggled up to the edge of the Cliffs and looked out over the grassy peaks before me, I kept saying to myself….“this won’t be the last time!”

Lazy.  Up until a few months ago that would have been the best word to describe me. If it required effort, time, or energy…I wasn’t interested. Sitting around, reading my books, napping, or watching a documentary on PBS was my ideal of a good time.

As I would scroll through Facebook in the evenings I would get so jealous as I saw the lives others were living. They were out doing things I wanted to do. Continue reading

Be A Travler

“The Traveler sees what he sees. The Tourist sees what he has come to see.” G.K. Chesterson

I am not a fan of the tourist. They arrive in their mini vans with their cameras and backpacks in tow. They crowd up the streets, fill up the shops, and typically are in a rush. They thrive on gaudy souvenirs, cheap buffets, and t-shirts that say they were there.

Oddly enough I live near one of the largest tourist destinations in the United States…The Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It is never NOT tourist season here. In Spring and Summer visitors flock here to frolic in the streams and see the wildflowers, in the Fall they come for the colors, and the Winter for the snow. Make any attempt to go up into the mountains on any given day and this will be what you see. Continue reading

Drink The Wild Air

“Live in the sunshine. Swim in the sea. Drink the wild air.”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

While there are many things I am good at, taking time off, away from work is not one of them. I will occasionally take a day or two off here or there, but scheduling an actual vacation, where you leave your home, drive to another location, and stay for an extended period of time…well that I just can’t bring myself to do.

Until last week. Continue reading

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do, than by they ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain.

Creature of habit.

That is the one phrase that could be used best to describe me.

I LOVE routine….I THRIVE on it.

I awaken at the same time each and every morning. Followed by eating the same breakfast EVERY day. If something throws me off my routine…… Continue reading

The Good Stuff

“You will miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.” Dr. Seuss

I love scavenger hunts. Yes, I am 41 years old, but I LOVE to go on the hunt for some object, prize, or treasure. There is just something thrilling to me about having a target and then painstakingly searching for it. Sometimes I have clues that guide me to what I am looking for, and sometimes I don’t even know what it is I  am seeking until I find it.

One of the most important aspects of a good scavenger hunt is keeping your eyes Open at all times. If you get distracted, groggy, or lazy….you’re going to miss out on what it is you are looking for. Continue reading

Just Bloom

A flower doesn’t think of competing with the flower next to it…. it just blooms.

How often have I gotten so ridiculously jealous over something another person possessed, that I wanted?  Probably too many to even count.

She makes more money than me.
She has a husband and kids.
He has the car I want.
She is faster then me.
He got the promotion over me.
She looks better in that outfit then I do.
He took the vacation I wanted.

There is always something to make me unsettled and unhappy. Continue reading

Enough Is Enough…..

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedom, it is because we destroyed ourselves.” Abraham Lincoln

Normally I shy away from controversial topics. It’s not because I am not passionate, unconcerned, or uninformed, but more because I have learned sometimes the strongest voices are the ones who may appear the weakest.

The times we are currently living in are scary. Very scary. Some days when I turn on the news, I silently pray… Please Lord come now. My fears and sadness are not just because of the violence and destruction I see, but also the ignorance that is displayed. Continue reading

Kid, You’ll Move Mountains

“And will you succeed? Yes, you will, indeed, 98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed. Kid, you’ll move mountains.” Dr. Seuss

Almost 3 months ago I stood at the start of the trail that would take me to the top of one of the most beautiful mountains…anywhere. I stood there excited, anxious, nervous, nauseous, and scared.

“If I turn back now, I can be back home and in my bed by 9am.” I told myself.

“No will ever know.”

I was alone, and feeling foolish for attempting such a massive hike. This was for the ELITE hikers. Not some little, short, chubby wanna be. The voices of the masses were filling my head: Continue reading

Stitched Together

“I am grateful for what I am and have. My Thanksgiving is perpetual.”  Henry David Thoreau

Thinking of my Origin Story  I do not even know where to begin. My life is like a beautiful homemade quilt. Each of the pieces are different. Some are perfect in size and shape, some are beautiful and regal, and some are brilliantly colored, expressing great joy.  But there are also some discolored and ragged pieces as well. Jagged and rough edges that, while on their own look unappealing, help make up the grand beauty of the quilt.

My life story is filled with all kinds of pieces. Some are gorgeous panels filled with splendid memories. Continue reading

Live Deliberately

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life and to see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Henry David Thoreau

I have been completely overwhelmed as of late.

Work deadlines
Bills to pay
Trying hard to be a good daughter, sister, and friend

Sometimes trying to stay Connected to all that is going on becomes too much and I get bogged down with STUFF. Continue reading
