Unstoppable

“If you could describe yourself using only word, what would it be?”

This was a question I was asked this week on an application for a writing assignment I am pursuing.

I HATE those kind of questions.

REALLY hate them.

I never know what to say.  Should I fluff it up and say things like Motivated. Creative. Smart.  Or should I be brutally honest and say….Lazy. Spastic. Mediocre.

But today I did not struggle.  Today I knew the exact word I wanted to use.

Unstoppable. Continue reading

A New And Different Sun

“Our lives are frittered away by detail…Simplify, simplify, simplify!”

Growing up, I didn’t fully understand what Henry David Thoreau was trying to say when he wrote those words. But over the past year they have become my life’s mantra.

Nothing is simple today.

In order for my face to be glowing as well as acne and wrinkle free, I have to use no less than 4 different products at least twice a day.  Sorry gals, Noxema and Oil of Olay don’t cut it anymore! Continue reading

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me. Continue reading

My Own Pace

“There is an old weather bettion house
that stands near a wood
With an orchard near by it
For all most one hundred years it has stood

It was my home in infency
It sheltered me in youth
When I tell you I love it
I tell you the truth.”

The above poem was written by Louisa Walker.  She was one of the infamous Walker Sisters who grew up deep inside the Great Smoky Mountains.  Her grandfather built a cabin in Little Greenbrier Cove sometime in the 1840’s.  When her father, John, came home from fighting for the Union in the Civil War, he moved his wife Margaret to the house and there they raised 11 children.  Continue reading

I Am, I Am, I Am

I am a big fan of fruit.  There is just something enticingly yummy about a big apple, grapefruit, or orange. However, there is nothing worse then anticipating a big Juicy bite, to only find a hollow, dry, and un-tasty mess.

The fact that I am a big ole nerd has never been a hidden fact. I love to watch PBS, listen to NPR, and yes, I absolutely ADORE reading the classics. Perhaps I am what is classified as an old soul. Continue reading

Going Scared

I am going to let you in on a little secret….

I am a big fat chicken.

If you and I are together in a terrifying situation, chances are you are going to sacrifice me so that you can survive. That is just how annoying I can be.

Being dramatic by nature, I tend to overreact to EVERYTHING. Once when my sister passed out during the benediction of our church service, I instantly started screaming, “HELP! SHE IS DYING!” Of course my sister was not dying, and my mother, who is the calmest person on the planet, was horrified by the attention we received. Continue reading

A Masterpiece

Do you ever catch yourself repeating the same phrase over and over, and OVER again? You know, one of those pesky little sayings that really is not meant to be a fact statement, but you say it so much, that eventually over time you start to believe it?

Anyone?????

If so, then this post if for you.  If not….read it anyway because, well, let’s face it….. you know you really do what I am talking about. Continue reading
