Like most people, I started 2017 off with lots of plans, goals, and hopes. January started strong, but quickly fizzled out. Before I knew it my world went into a violent tail spin and here, almost one year later, I am still not recovered. Continue reading
I am a murderer. Of flowers and plants that is.
For whatever reason, when I was born, the part of your brain that has the capacity to take care of living things such as flowers, plants, and other blooming items, was completely left out of me. But I have tried.
And tried. Continue reading
Have you ever been so inspired and moved by something, that it simply leaks from every fiber of your being? You have been so changed and touched, that you just have to share?
A year ago, I embarked on a journey that has forever changed me. Looking back, I don’t even recognize the me from a year ago. As a writer, words are my lifeline. Sometimes writing is the only way I can adequately express myself. Continue reading
I am a big fan of fruit. There is just something enticingly yummy about a big apple, grapefruit, or orange. However, there is nothing worse then anticipating a big Juicy bite, to only find a hollow, dry, and un-tasty mess.
The fact that I am a big ole nerd has never been a hidden fact. I love to watch PBS, listen to NPR, and yes, I absolutely ADORE reading the classics. Perhaps I am what is classified as an old soul. Continue reading
I’m a big fan of bumper stickers.
Seriously, is there anything better when you are having a crappy day then reading something like, “Honk if you Love Tacos!” or “Follow Me To Billy’s Bargain Barn!” ?
Come on, you know you smile at those!
As a teenager I had my own on my trusty little Subaru…. “Don’t Follow Me….I’m LOST!” and my personal favorite…. “I STILL MISS ELVIS“.
Sometimes they can even make you reflect on just how wonderful and blessed you really are.
Yesterday morning while heading to the mountains to meet some friends to do some winter hiking in the freshly fallen snow, I got behind a beat up Nissan with the following message attached to their rear bumper…..
“STARS CAN’T SHINE WITHOUT DARKNESS”
Right there in my little Honda Civic on Highway 92 I had a moment.
See for me the dark has always been scary. I like knowing what is around me, and being able to see what lies ahead. When the lights are on.. so am I.
But when the lights go out…..I shut down.
It is so easy to Shine in the daylight when things are golden and going great. But once darkness sets in and times get rough or dreary……we forget that even in the dark we can shine and illuminate our world.
I have written about my friend Teri before. She is the most positive person I have met.
You cannot be around Teri and NOT smile.
She is the total meaning of the bumper sticker that caused me to have a moment yesterday, and the person I immediately thought of when I read it. Ironically, she was also the person I was driving to meet.
Teri has a zest and love for life. She genuinely loves people and has the incredible ability to make the darkest days and moments seem so bright. You can totally hate your life, be absolutely hateful, sick, or just in a bad place, and Teri can make you forget how bad things are and make you feel like all is right in the world in a matter of minutes. I dare you to spend 5 minutes with her and not smile or snort from laughter.
It can NOT be done.
This is the attitude I strive to embody. A love and Joy for life that shines through, even when it is super dark. To live out the challenge given in Philippians 2:14-15:
“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure children of God, without fault in a crooked and depraved generation in which you shine like stars in the universe.”
Life is not perfect. Oh how I wish it were.
Sometimes it is nasty, rocky, scary, and ugly. The madness, sadness, and ignorance we see can often be too much and just make us bitter, hateful, and dark. Sometimes that darkness consumes us to the point that we forget that, even then, we have the ability to shine.
Friends, life was not meant to be lived in the dark. You and I were created to shine so that we can remind others, they too were created to shine, so that they can reflect their light to inspire as well.
Even on the darkest of nights, we are never without light.
Life is not perfect, but it full of mystery, wonder, excitement, and beauty. Enjoy EVERY waking moment. Like Marty Robbins once said, “Every day is a good day to be alive, whether the sun is shining or not.” Don’t be afraid of the darkness. There is no need to let it overwhelm you. Just remember you are a star….and stars ALWAYS shine when it’s dark!
I have heard it said that Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Now, I am not going to lie, I always thought my life would END at the end of my comfort zone. I could just picture me taking a leap out of a flying plane, only to hear the pilot say as I made my exit…. “Hey! You forgot the parachute!”
I longed for adventure and change, but I could not get past the fear of what MIGHT happen if I opened myself up to it. Seriously…..so much could go wrong. What if I looked stupid? What if I totally botched it? What if I thought I was totally rocking it and I fell flat on my face? Continue reading
Those are the exact miles I have hiked in the past 5.5 months. What started as another harebrained idea of mine, has ended up changing my life. I was a sad and broken soul, desperate for change. My purpose was lost, and I needed to find it.
What I found was something much, much greater. Continue reading
My heart is heavy
From the work it takes to keep on breathing
These were the words I heard as I started my car this morning to head to work. I knew the song well, even though it had been a while since I had heard it. As I entered my car, there was no better way to describe me then by these words…
I’ve made mistakes
I’ve let my hope fail
My soul feels crushed
By the weight of this world Continue reading
“Girl, you really need to just stop. You are embarrassing us, and I really just want to go home and eat a box of Fudge Rounds.”
This is the actual conversation I had with myself about a mile into my hike on Saturday.
The day started out well enough. I met some fellow hiking enthusiast to tackle one of the toughest hikes in the park…. Rocky Top. Most of the people in the group I had never met until that morning… in fact, I only knew two of the ladies and had already hiked with them. But the rest were strangers and I didn’t really know what to expect. Continue reading
